From the Asbury Park Press:
Love is in the air this Valentine’s Day.
It just might not be on the turntable at the Running with Scissors alternative-rock party Thursday, Valentine’s Day, at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick. Philly-club DJ Marilyn Thomas, also known as the New Wave Diva, is this month’s guest jock, but she doesn’t have a ton of new-wave love songs to choose from.
The arena-rock and hair-metal bands of the ’80s have a corner on the lovey-dovey stuff, Thomas said.
“A lot of those bands really knew their market,” said Thomas, who lives in Matawan. “They knew there would be starry-eyed girls going to look up at the frontman who was a really good-looking guy. Not to say some of the alternative bands didn’t have good-looking guys — Duran Duran was gorgeous — but a lot of the bands like Devo and Echo and the Bunnymen didn’t have lead singers to die for.”
Still, the new wave and alt-rock bands of the ’80s had their moments.
“The alternative acts touched on it, but didn’t go full force into the ballads,” Thomas said. “Their love songs were still accessible to the clubs, but they stayed away from the long-winded ballads.”
Speaking about club accessibility, Thomas is one of Philadelphia’s leading DJs with her — and DJ Robert Drake’s — “Sex Dwarf” ’80s-themed party, closing in on its five-year anniversary at the city’s Fluid Nightclub. Fluid is where Questlove of the Roots and electronica legend Josh Wink also have regular nights, and folks like DJ Kool Herc, Jazzy Jeff and Spinderella regularly stop by to spin.
Deejaying in Philly is the major leagues.
“The Philly scene is very friendly to the arts and very friendly to the music scenes,” said Thomas. “A lot of the clubs, not all of them, are friendly and open to allowing you to express yourself as long as there’s no drama — you can do what you want.”
